When to replace
- Age. This Old House puts a submersible pump's life at 5 to 15 years. Pedestal pumps can last up to 30.
- Warning signs. Running nonstop, cycling on and off, loud grinding, or not starting when you pour water into the pit.
- Blueprint pumps. If the City installed your pump through Blueprint Columbus, the City says replacing it after the warranty is the homeowner's job. Program details.
Battery or water-powered backup?
- Battery backup runs a second pump when the power goes out or the main pump fails. The battery wears out and has to be replaced.
- Water-powered backup uses city water pressure instead of a battery, so it keeps going as long as the water is on. It needs a plumber to tie into your water line and uses a lot of water while it runs.
