City of Columbus programs that can pay for basement protection
Before you hire anyone, check these two City programs. We're not affiliated with the City; this is a plain summary with links to the official pages.
Project Dry Basement (backwater valves)
- What it covers: the cost of an approved backflow prevention device (a backwater valve) that guards against sewer backups.
- Who qualifies: single and two-family homes in Columbus that have had a sewer backup caused by the public sewer surcharging in wet weather or by a blockage.
- How to start: report the backup to the 24-hour Sewer Maintenance Operations Center at 614-645-7102 and keep your service request number. Program questions: 614-645-8404 or DOSD@columbus.gov.
- Your job afterward: the City says the valve must be inspected and cleaned monthly.
Blueprint Columbus (voluntary sump pumps)
- What it covers: in Blueprint project areas, the City installs a sump pit, a pump with battery backup, a discharge pipe and new concrete around the pit. The City's brochure says there are no direct costs to the homeowner.
- Who qualifies: owners of single-family homes or duplexes without a sump pump, in an area where Blueprint is under way, if the City finds a pump would be cost-effective. The City picks the contractor.
- Your job afterward: maintaining the pump, and replacing it once the warranty runs out.
- Check your address: the City's Blueprint page has a map of project areas. Contact: 614-645-1253 or blueprint@columbus.gov.
Outside these programs, or outside the City's limits? Here's what a sump pump costs on your own.
